About Fin

Finlay has been a professional golfer since 1994 and is a member of the PGA. He suffered shoulder and spine injuries which hampered his ability to play and like a number of his colleagues at The Movement Studio, he has used the personal experience of physical injury to forge a second career as a wellness practitioner.

Through the practice of Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis® Finlay brought himself back to full health and enhanced skill and he uses this hard-won experience every day to help fellow sportsman, performers and ordinary members of the public to find lasting pain relief, increased strength and flexibility – and for those that need it, enhanced results in their chosen fields of endeavour.

Finlay has been wholly absorbed by the science of biomechanics for more than 30 years. He caught the golfing bug as a teenager and resolved himself to become a professional golfer. For him, this was a journey of studying a vast array of approaches to improving human performance and to question its very essence.

After leaving University, where he’d immersed himself in the emerging Sports Sciences, he threw himself into a technique led crusade to better performance – it was an experience of diminishing returns. Finlay began to lose trust in himself and the intuitive skills and self-awareness that had made him such a fine young prospect in the first place.

2 events fundamentally changed him and help rediscover his calling. The first was a shoulder and spine injury and the other meeting a kindred spirit and pioneering coach, Kendall McWade.

His injuries and subsequent lack of good rehabilitation drastically altered how he played. It became clear to him that in order to achieve full fitness and skill level a much more focused approach was necessary. It was at this point that he discovered Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis.

Of Kendal, Finlay says; ” helped me trust my own instincts and abilities again and more crucially though, he also impressed upon me the example of a true teacher as someone who will guide and lead a student to make their own discoveries. And that is something I carry with me to this day in terms of my own approach to improving physical ability.”

Injury effectively called time on his personal golfing ambitions but, he says; “It was then I realised that my vocation was really, not to pursue my own dreams of glory but rather to help other people. It dawned on me that as good as I was at golf I had had other, more personally rewarding, things to offer – skills and experience that could make a profound impact on the lives of other people.”

Having finally found his true calling, a decade on, Finlay Menzies is widely renowned as a leading practitioner in the disciplines of Gyrokinesis and Gyrotonic, with a specific expertise in dealing with sporting and general injuries, long-standing pain issues and conditions such as sciatica, frozen shoulder, scoliosis and arthritis. He worked with Scottish Ballet for 11 years – rehabilitating dancers or working on optimising performance movements. With his vast practical experience of fine motor control, honed on the golf course and as a professional golf instructor, Finlay brings the drive to help others and a wealth of technical know-how to his role as a founder and highly respected member of The Movement Studio team.

I suffered from increasing back and nerve pain for years from my 20s through to my 40s, spent thousands on specialists, had more than one operation to 'fix' my back problem and had reached the point where my ability to work was impacted. Even after the last operation, little helped until my Chiropractor suggested Gyrotonics and gave me the number of The Movement Studio. Now, after just under a year of working with Kate and Fin, I can do exercise again, and carry out normal, day to day tasks without worry or stress.
Gyrotonics allows me to enjoy myself and work on keeping my back healthy. This means I do not have to take pain medicine or visit the doctor, and can enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle. I recommend Gyrotonics to anyone - no matter what your fitness level. It is no 'quick fix' or 'trendy solution' - what it does provide is an effective, targeted, and above all individualised programme that brings you back to feeling yourself. Try it and you will find this out for yourself.

I have been involved in optimising my own and other peoples fine motor movements for over 20 years. After injuring myself and failing to get properly better I discovered Gyrotonic. This is a very powerful and effective practice and in a relatively short time overcame my difficulties. Of greater significance though I discovered the practicality of moving energy through my body in an efficient way. Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis enabled me to understand many concepts which were, until that time, just ideas and knowledge. These practices have enabled to merge the artistry and science of movement, together with the connection of mind, body and emotion. I have better balance, posture and co-ordination than ever before.

Mums, mums to be (and Dads!)

Anyone who has children knows just how demanding they are. Obviously, pregnancy and childbirth place enormous demands and institute huge changes in the physiology. However, as we meet there constant demands we are required to sleep at funny angles, pick them up constantly, in and out of cars, lift bags of shopping – often all at the same time and one handed! This is not to mention the physical stresses of worry and lack of sleep. It is without doubt that our bodies suffer over the first few years. Both Kate and Finlay know this from personal experience. The benefits of Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis for our posture and well being are profound and can reverse the ravages of looking after childen.

Both Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis are ideal exercise during pregnancy. Pregnancy puts tremendous strain on the body. Ligaments become lax and the skeleton loses support. The systems work the small muscles that support the skeleton so you have the tone and co-ordination to compensate. They help relieve lower back pain and constipation, whilst energising the body to combat fatigue. The improvements to blood circulation and deep muscular activity help prevent swollen legs and varicose veins and will increase blood circulation and oxygen to the womb. The systems will also build strength and stamina for the birthing process.

Kate doing Gyrotonic at 8 months.

During pregnancy our bodies take on a mind of their own, and change in ways we never thought they could or would.
Exercise through pregnancy has been shown to be extreemely beneficial. Following a careful pattern of strengthening exercises, gentle stretches and relaxation Gyrotonic can help to relieve many of the side affects our bodies have through pregnancy. Keeping us fit and healthy.

As the baby grows the affects of lifting and comforting, doing things with one hand all take their toll. It is vital to regain control of our body, as it is amazing how fast you will discover little niggles turning into pain.
Posture is key as is regaining pelvis and spine back into alignment.
Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis intricate and explicit attention to detail allows the body to regain strength, allignment, flexibility and posture as well as bringing an increased sense of well being and energy.

George Dallas award winner for outstanding contribution to Scottish Athletics

I am an 81 year old man who until 2011 was fit able and active. Having had 4 operations on my back I was left completely immobile and worried for my future. My worry was accentuated as I have led a life dedicated to the support of Scottish Athletics and have also been both an international speed skater and a professional motor cyclist.

In early 2012 I heard about the Movement Studio and the Gyrotonic system of rehabilitation they use – at once I was hooked and could see how it would benefit me. I travel each week from Ayr to see Finlay and have achieved remarkable progress in every way – mentally as well as emotionally. I now walk unaided and enjoy an altogether better outlook on life.

At my age in gives me no end of pleasure to know that in so many ways I am gaining mobility that I have not had for years – even before my operation. My visits are the highlight of my week and I would recommend anyone who want to improve their mobility – whether as a rehabilitative practice or to improve athletic ability to give them a visit.

Glen Henderson

I first came to Gyrotonics about 5 years ago. Why was I drawn to it? I had previously had two episodes of back surgery, for prolapsed discs, and had slowly recovered doing a lot – about an hour every day – of yoga. Yes, the yoga helped, but I felt any improvement had plateau’d.‘’ Why did I think Gyrotonics was for me? I love rhythmic movement attuned to the breath, and this seemed like a moving meditation type of activity that would be good for my mind as well as my body.
After the first lesson I was hooked, and after a month I improved more with Gyrotonics than with two years of yoga; and this was with only one session per week, as I live a considerable distance from Glasgow. After a few months, rather bizarrely, both my teacher and I became unwell, and I had a substantial break. A lot of this time off was spent in bed, or resting, and it was probably the hard work put in previously that meant my back didn’t break down again.
I returned to class, but this time with the Movement Studio, and it helped straight away. My illness meant I did not improve at quite the amazing rate I had previously, but Fin is a wonderful and patient teacher; despite the cost, if I were able to come to Glasgow more than once per week I would definitely have more. Since I started with Fin, I have had two relapses of my illness, and hope to resume class very soon. Each time I have been unwell the core strength Gyrotonics has built up means that I don't completely ‘crumble.’
When I do Gyrotonics regularly I walk tall, and feel loose-limbed and toned in a way no other exercise has managed to achieve.

Dr Ellie Dow Doctor of Medicine

In fact, I have been a lot better since our session yesterday. I didn't seize up this morning after sitting for 15 minutes at breakfast. Also, I have been out and about in the car for most of the morning - also without any problems. What a tribute to Gyrotonic!

James McKenzie

As a former professional Ballet dancer I have GYROTONIC to be extremely helpful in rehabilitation and injury prevention. Due to its nature it also allows people to regain control and an awareness of their bodies that they had when they were younger. This gives them much more freedom and happiness in their lives. As an alternative to traditional exercise it provides greater awareness and balance through the muscles encouraging a healthier and more flexible physique.

Kate Menzies Former Professional Ballet Dancer

After having three children and suffering from constant backache, gyrotonic has helped me increase not only my core strength but I feel stronger all over. My pain has been greatly reduced and its definitely increased my range of movement. I’d recommend it to those wanting to see some definite results even after a few sessions.

Gyrotonic was recommended to me 4yrs ago as, increasingly,
I was suffering both joint and muscular pain and did not have the range or ease
of movement which I required for both my work as a PE lecturer and my continued
participation in a variety of sports. I really thought I might not be able to continue skiing – something I did not
want to consider.

Gyrotonic has made an immense difference to my situation. It has improved my overall flexibility and
has built up my core strength. It has allowed me to continue working in a
practical setting with students and to still participate both in the sports
which I enjoy and annual family skiing holidays. Gyrotonics continually challenges me to be
aware of my own body and how it is moving, or not as often is the case!! It is hard work but Fin is an excellent
teacher with a depth of knowledge as to the most appropriate programme,
tailored to meet my specific needs. I enjoy working with him and after each session feel better, feel less
stressed and feel as if my body has been really “stretched out”. I thoroughly recommend Gyrotonic as a
holistic approach to wellbeing.

I suffered debilitating, chronic lower back pain for years. Iattended several clinicians with very mixed results. Eventually, in desperation, I stumbled into the Park Practice and was seen by Dr Dawn Blaser, chiropractor. Dr Blaser has been absolutely marvellous in providing relief and greatly alleviating the problem. However, she was aware that underlying poor posture and a semi-sedentary office lifestyle were major contributing factors to my condition. I am eternally grateful to Dr Blaser for recommending The Movement Studio to me for Gyrotonics exercise.
I now attend the Studio regularly and really feel the benefit. I am more active but hurt my back and require chiropractic treatment very much less frequently; the extent of the resulting injury now tends to be minor, and the recovery time is rapid.
I have enjoyed personal tuition from Kate and Finlay Menzies. My posture has improved dramatically, I am more flexible and active. My breathing is improved. I can happily undertake physical activities which would have crippled me previously. I am experiencing steady, ongoing improvement in my physical wellbeing.

I didn't know a huge amount about Gyrotonic but was looking at something to help me recover from a back injury And ensure I came back stronger. Fin helped me do this and more. Through his sessions I strengthened my core whilst improving my flexibility and mobility especially in my lower back and hips. I can't recommend Fin highly enough, he has great knowledge and was very thorough with me during sessions and explained everything we were doing in detail.

Gyrotonic has given me movement and posture that I thought had gone forever. It has made me stronger and more supple. More importantly, it has taken away my back pain and helped me understand the causes of it. I feel back in control of my body. This is extraordinary exercise for anyone. Finlay and Kate Menzies are dedicated teachers who really know what can be achieved.

Following major spinal surgery I was advised as part of my recuperation process to take up a form of exercise that did not cause me to further damage my back, but in fact worked to strengthen and repair the damage I had suffered.
Gyrotonic was recommended by a friend who had, had similar problems and felt it would be perfect for my situation. Fin & Kate immediately understood the issues I had and devised a program that situated my capabilities. Gyrotronics was the perfect system for providing the core strengthening…
In a very short space of time I felt the benefits and the confidence it gave me to was a huge boost in my recovery process.

Pain relieving benefits of Gyrotonic®

The most common therapeutic use of Gyrotonic® is in non-specific back pain. (Something very specific is wrong but it is incredibly hard to diagnose and treat). It is has been said that the spine is like a string of beads doing the job of a telephone pole. Alignment is vital to its proper functioning. Tension or lack of mobility at one point affects the whole chain. Often the place where people feel pain is not where the problem originated.

Relief from chronic back pain.

The way in which Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis® principles are applied at the Movement Studio encourages an exploration of the spine. This exploration unravels the problem and fixes it at the same time. You will get to the root cause of your issue.

Gyrotonic® stretches and strengthens. Tension will be released in the areas of pain and most importantly, appropriate strength in the corresponding and supporting abdominal musculature will be addressed.

Alleviating symptoms of pain.

Other causes of chronic pain – diseases like fibromyalgia or multiple sclerosis – are more difficult to treat, because so little is known about them, but many clients credit Gyrotonic® with helping to alleviate symptoms. The undulating movement and connected breathing, provide a gentle massage to connective tissues, organs and nerves, and helps pump lymph and cerebro-spinal fluid. These fluids are only circulated when we move. Better circulation of these fluids means your immune system is healthier, your body does a better job of removing wastes and toxins, and your nerve cells are healthier.

Help with arthritic pain.

The same is true of arthritis. The best thing you can do to improve the health of your joints is move, but the pain of moving with arthritis can be very acute. There is no blood supply to the joint surfaces, and they get their nutrition from the fluid inside the joint, which circulates when you move. This process is impaired in an arthritic person. Gyrotonic® takes pressure off the joints, making movements less painful and also helps lubricate fluid into the joints. This means your joints have more cushioning and better access to nutrients after every session.

Gyrokinesis®

the class based version of Gyrotonic® that stretches, and strengthens, helps posture and back pain.

Gyrokinesis® is a new method of exercise which helps lengthen and strengthen muscles, stimulates circulation, enhances flexibility, helps in the mobility of the joints and co-ordination. It also provides back pain relief and rehabilitates the body after injury.

Gyrokinesis® (exercises allow one to work on the entire body through seven natural elements of spinal movement. In this method of rhythmic, ‘spinal yoga,’ you will learn movement which incorporates arching, curling, bending, twisting and spiralling of the spine. Corresponding breath patterns help to properly stimulate the nervous system, open up energy pathways and oxygenate the blood. Techniques are used to invigorate and re-educate the body to move with freedom, ease and core power.

Classes build up gradually, often starting with self massage to awaken the senses and prepare the body for quality movements. Movements flow from one pattern to another as the class progresses and movements deepen. There is a continuity through the whole class. Classes begin seated on the stool, progressing to the floor – sitting and lying and finally to standing.

Some of the hallmarks of Gyrokinesis® exercises are the fluidity of the movements and the ease with which anyone can perform them.

You will be left, at the end of each Gyrokinesis® session, with a physical and mental sense of calm confidence and enormous energy.

In fact, I have been a lot better since our session yesterday. I didn't seize up this morning after sitting for 15 minutes at breakfast. Also, I have been out and about in the car for most of the morning - also without any problems. What a tribute to Gyrotonic!

Gyrotonic®

One to one exercise therapy for well being, health, posture and pain relief.

The Gyrotonic® Expansion System is a totally new one to one exercise system for well being and health, which exercises the musculature while mobilising and articulating the joints. It is unique in that it strengthens and stretches at the same time with minimal effort, increasing the range of movement and co-ordination. It uses aspects of, swimming, ballet, yoga, tai chi and gymnastics. The system allows muscle groups to be worked interdependently and in an integrated manner.

The Gyrotonic® training is done on a specially designed piece of equipment (The White Cloud Machine) which emphasises multiple joint articulation strengthening the surrounding ligaments including the attachments. The exercises use hand and foot-operated wheelbases and suspended pulleys to create resistance. There are 50 sets of exercises with about 130 variations to stretch, bend, twist and turn muscles with minimal effort.

The motion patterns are natural and flowing and through the rotating movement patterns of the joints a balanced support system for the skeleton is created. Attention is given to increase the functional capacity of the spine resulting in a well proportioned body, which is less likely to incur injury. Correcting such muscular imbalances and limitations in joint range of motion helps to reduce and even eradicate fatigue, pain and immobility.

The Gyrotonic® Expansion System is particularly beneficial to athletes by helping to improve endurance versatility and gracefulness to all performed competitive skills and movements.

The Gyrotonic® Expansion System is used world-wide by people of all walks of life, from children to senior citizens, to help in injury rehabilitation as well as general health and well being. It is also used extensively by dancers and sports people for rehabilitation and performance improvement.

In summary:

  • Promotes flexibility
  • Strength
  • Co-ordination
  • Range of movement
  • Wellbeing
  • Enhances aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation
  • Neuromuscular rejuvenation
  • Increased functional capacity of the spine
  • Sculpt your body
  • Reduce your stress levels
  • Increase your energy levels
  • Improves balance

Gyrotonic is great! Most golfers fight coming up out of the shot, but this strengthening routine works on keeping you in the shot from start to finish. Since I have been paying attention to my posture and flexibility, I have moved from 60th to 30th on the money list in one year.

In fact, I have been a lot better since our session yesterday. I didn't seize up this morning after sitting for 15 minutes at breakfast. Also, I have been out and about in the car for most of the morning - also without any problems. What a tribute to Gyrotonic!

Finlay Menzies Partner of Movement Studio

After having three children and suffering from constant backache, Gyrotonic has helped me increase not only my core strength but I feel stronger all over. My pain has been greatly reduced and its definitely increased my range of movement. I'd recommend it to those wanting to see some definite results even after a few sessions.
